Dozens of bodies from a capsized boat carrying more than 200 illegal immigrants have been spotted floating in the Indian Ocean by the Indonesian Search and Rescue (SAR).

As of Wednesday, 38 bodies had been found, but the SAR helicopter crew spotted dozens of bodies floating off Layar Island, Banyuwangi, East Java.

"High waves and unfriendly weather hamper us from recovering more bodies,” said the head of the Indonesian Navy SAR team at Banyuwangi Port, Apang Suparman.

The more than 200 asylum seekers from the Middle East were believed to have been trying to reach Australia.
